So what is it?
Teletherapy takes place when you deliver therapy remotely, that is, you are in one location and your client is at another location. The actual therapy is provided by using secure, video conferencing technology. During your interactive therapy session, the therapist and the student can see and hear each other in real-time. Teletherapy can also be pre-recorded. I use pre-recorded methods to provide homework and further explain concepts. Some Speech-Language Pathologists and families find it useful to use a hybrid method consisting of live, interactive therapy and pre-recorded sessions. Others prefer a combination of teletherapy sessions and in-person sessions.
Teletherapy gives families and therapists freedom and flexibility.
Where does it happen? Therapy happens online in a virtual meeting space. I like to call it my virtual speech office. The therapist is usually at home and the student is either at a school or in their home. The virtual speech office is essentially an online platform used to deliver therapy. At A Plus Speech, we use Zoom to deliver online therapy sessions. Training is provided to parents and students so that everyone feels comfortable using online, interactive tools.
The virtual speech office is also known as the teletherapy platform.
The virtual speech office is online software that is used to deliver therapy. Live video streaming is used so that the therapist and student can communicate throughout the session. The therapist uses the platform to share worksheets, pictures, videos, flashcards, stories, education games, coloring pages and much more. Interactive tools such as virtual highlighter, pen, eraser, multiple-choice, drag-and-drop, fill-in-the-blank, and text editor are used. The student uses these tools to respond and work together with the therapist when learning new skills. Specific activities can be recorded and sent to the parents to help them see how their child performed in a certain skill.
